First Audiobook, Live Event Update
Audiobook streaming is here in a big way

Audiobooks!
We teamed up with Oekom to publish the Toxisch Reich audiobook (streaming links / Audible link) as our first audiobook release. It’s also our first German release. Check it out!
In its first months, the book became a Spiegel Bestseller and has sold hundreds of audiobooks.
And more are coming - we aim to have 5-10 audiobooks in our portfolio by the end of 2025…
Audiobooks are v hot right now
Ben here. We decided to invest in expanding our portfolio of audiobooks - in addition to shows and podcasts - not only because of the response to Toxisch Reich but because of larger potential. Like:
Audiobook sales have been showing consistent (approx. 10%) growth for years: Audiobook sales rose 13% in 2024.
There’s room to grow: 51% of US adults have listened to an audiobook.
It’s a good time to be new on the scene: 99% of sales are digital, and the pace of change is only increasing. New tools for audio production and discovery mean a niche publisher like Kollo Media has a chance to participate.
Audiobook discovery is about to change massively: Spotify started offering audiobooks this year, which means more people have started listening. And from what I can see in our data, streaming is going to overtake downloads very quickly.
Revenue is baked in: Audiobook streams and downloads cost money - even if the margins are very tight.
But most importantly: I love audiobooks and believe that, over time, the differences between podcasts and audiobooks will continue to decrease. Format will become less important. What will remain important will be spending time with ideas in a way that you enjoy listening to.
And yes, Spotify is paying out just 0.05 € per hour listened.

See you on 17 July
